DICTIONARY

1. Soliloquy: the act of speaking while alone.
“(…) in the scarcely breathing silence, the absentminded, soliloquizing hum or whistle, of absorbed concentration.” (Page 4)
I was hearing behind the door, and his soliloquizing speech was wonderful.

2. Zealous: actively and unreservedly enthusiastic.
“‘I shall begin at the beginning, ’ said the D.H.C. and the more zealous students recorded his intention in their notebooks: (…)” (Page 5)
Carlos is sometimes annoying, because he’s very zealous.

3. Beget: to be the cause of something; to be the father of a child.
“Rams wrapped in theremogene beget no lambs.” (Page 5)
Global warming is beget of the recent and abundant rain here in Bogotá.

4. Faintly: dizzy or weak, as if about to become unconscious.
“Machinery faintly purred.” (Page 6)
She was very drunk, and she faintly fell on my arms.

5. Purr: to make the low soft vibrating noise that a machine, specially an engine, makes when it is perfectly tuned and is running well.
While I was driving, my cousin purred all the time.

6. Fling: to move forcefully in a way that seems impressive or dramatic.
“‘Scores,’ the Director repeated and flung out his arms, as though he were distributing largesse.” (Page 7)
A friend was going to hit me but I flung the way out.

7. Largesse: the generous giving of gifts, money or favors.
The largesse of my grandfather is incredible, in Christmas he gave me a car.

8. Tremulous: shaking, trembling, or quavering; showing fear or nervousness about something.
“The voice was almost tremulous with enthusiasm.” (Page 7)
Last week I was exposing a topic in biology class, and in the beginning I was tremulous.

9. Beckon: to signal to somebody to approach with a movement of the hand or head.
“Beckoning to a fair-haired, ruddy young man who happened to be passing at the moment.” (Page 8)
I was beckoning to a friend yesterday, but she didn’t saw me.

10. Ruddy: with a healthy reddish glow.
“The ruddy young man approached.” (Page 8)
I like her ruddy cheeks, when she’s ashamed.




11. Decanting Room
The room in which the babies are removed from the bottles


12. Ectogenesis
Growing something outside of the body rather than inside; in this case growing embryos in bottles rather than in a mother's womb


13. Hypnopaedia
Sleep learning, which is part of the conditioning process. Huxley pretends that it was discovered that people could learn ethics while sleeping, and it is used extensively to help teach lessons that ensure social stability.


14. Boskage
A mass of trees or shrubs; a thicket


15. Asafetida
A gummy resin with an obnoxious odor


16. Epsilons
The lowest caste of the Utopian society. They are malformed and quite stupid.


17. Gammas
A low caste in society. They are mostly laborers and menial workers.


18. Bokanovsky Group
A group of identical twins created by dividing a single egg many times. This process is only used on Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons.

The highest caste in society

20. Caste System
The society exists as a five-tiered caste system consisting of Alphas, Betas, Gammas, Deltas, and Epsilons. Alpha caste members are the ruling elite, with each respective caste becoming progressively less intelligent and smaller in stature.
